Psychology PhD
The mission of SMU’s doctoral program in Clinical Psychology is to train psychologists whose professional activities are based on scientific knowledge and methods.
The program integrates rigorous research training with state-of-the-art, evidence-based clinical training. Thus, our program emphasizes the development of conceptual and research skills as well as scientifically-based clinical practice skills.
The overarching goal is for our Ph.D. graduates to use empirical methods to advance psychological knowledge and whose approach to clinical phenomena is consistent with scientific evidence.
The M.A. in Clinical/Counseling Psychology is a terminal M.A. program that includes coursework consistent with certification for a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the State of Texas.� The goal of this program is to train students in the delivery of psychological services.
Students take coursework in psychotherapy, theories and� methods of marriage and family therapy, psychological assessment, and psychopathology.� A thesis is not required as part of this program.
